Commander Ottaway was played by Evan Ottaway himself who after the death of his character took up the role of Commander Buzz Polaris. He is now playing as Lieutenant Commander Vanessa Baron.

History
Evan was born in Brisbane Australia to a family of four with a older brother and a younger sister. He had always hoped to join Starfleet as his father had served in the fleet as a security officer onboard the USS Goergia. When he turned nineteen he went straight to the academy and entered courses in flight control, science and operations. While at the academy he also entered various sporting events winning the annual cross coutnry twice.
He excelled in Flight Control and Operations and when graduated was transferred to the USS Rend as a Flight Control Officer after a short time he was promoted to the position of Chief Flight Control Officer and held that position until he was transferred to the new USS Pacifica as Chief of Operations. Evan looked forward to the change in jobs and enjoyed it the change of pace. He served on the Pacifica for about seven or eight missions in which time he was promoted to the rank of Commander and made a number of good friends. This eventually came to an end when he was assimilated by the borg from an alternate universe. There was an attempted rescue but Evan died on the doctor's table while she tried to remove his implants.
