Mark is naturally good with mathematics and physics which makes him a natural engineer. He knows every system of his ship the Pacifica and can quickly correct most problems that might occur. Off duty he enjoys spending time in the holodeck engaged in a variety of different sports with some of his workmates from engineering. Other then that he is a dedicated officer who is friendly and very loyal

History
Pre-Starfleet Academy
Mark had a simple early life in a stable family with an older brother, from an early age he concentrated on his school studies so he could go into the best line of work possible for himself. With good grades his interests turned towards a career in Starfleet and as soon as he was old enough to he enrolled in the academy.
Starfleet Academy
At the academy Mark concentrated primarily on engineering courses including warp physics among other things, he also done some minor science courses to keep his options open.
Starfleet History
After his time at the academy Mark was first assignment to the Utopia Planetia Shipyard where he worked as a junior engineer on Starship construction mainly working in the areas of warp core design. He worked their for a year before being assigned to the USS Intrepid where he served as the ship's warp core specialist. During his two years on the Intrepid he further developed his engineering skills and halfway during his tour on the Intrepid he took up the position as a general engineer. He continued to develop his engineering skills which earned him a promotion to the position of Assistant Chief Engineer on the USS Galaxy. He served on the Galaxy for three years in this position. Before being offered the position of Chief Engineer on the Sovereign Class USS Pacifica. He accepted the position and transferred to his new ship while it was on route to one of it's mission.
His first few weeks on the Pacifica were really quite and he more or less kept to himself as he learned main engineering inside and out. He played a major role during the Pacifica's escort mission where he managed to hold the ship together well. He also was heavily involved in the defence and protection of the Pacifica during the encounter with the Borg at Deep Space 12, where Commander Ottaway was lost. On the mission to recover the USS Noble where the Pacifica suffered heavy damage after being thrown back in time, Kirkwood managed to lead the engineering teams in restoring main power to the ship. He was also the man who saved the ship from certain destruction when he managed to get the ship's warp core back online seconds before the ship would of been engulfed by a shockwave that had came from a nearby sun which went supernova. In the following weeks Kirkwood lead the [[USS Pacifica|Pacifica's][ engineering teams as they repaired the USS Noble, he and Cesarian eventually had to rig the Noble to be destroyed.
After a busy few months the Pacifica returned to Deep Space 12 and Kirkwood oversaw a busy 2 month refit of the Pacifica that saw the ship gain 5 new decks and a realignment to the nacelles which brought the ship back up to date with the latest Sovereign specifications. After the Archerian Incident Kirkwood took his first LOA in a number of years and took a well deserved holiday. He returned to the Pacifica later in the year where he is still serving as Chief Engineer.
