The Second Officer Postion and Chain of Command

Posted on Thu Oct 4th, 2007 @ 5:25am by Captain Daniel Butterworth

Hi everyone,

I had planned on making an official announcement in regards to the Second Officer position and our ship’s chain of command some time ago, but it had completely slipped my mind until now. As I began to consider who should replace Lt. Venn as our 2XO I started to realise that the Second Officer position on the Pacifica had never fully been utilised to its full potential and that was something that I have wanted to change. For years we have been using the Second Officer position solely and almost purely a IC writing tool, when in reality the person holding the position should also be helping out with the OOC side of things here on the Pacifica.

It hasn’t been an issue for us or for me over the years as Connie has chipped in and helped out quite a bit with the OOC side of things here on the Pacifica. For all intensive purposes Connie as been the ship’s Second Officer in all but title for the past couple of years and that is something that I have really wanted to change by naming her as the ship’s new 2XO. In the past Connie has turned down offers to become our official 2XO due to the simple fact that it is her wish to keep her character firmly cemented down in Sickbay and way from the command picture. Her wish is fair enough as we are for the most part a character driven simulation not to mention the fact that we are primarily here to have fun. However I don’t believe that it is necessary for us to go through the process of picking out a new 2XO when in reality we already have one.

So after a great deal of consideration on my part and after discussing this with Craig (L’Verrem) I have decided to split the Pacifica’s Chain of Command into separate CoCs. This means that from now on the Pacifica will operate with two Chains of Command; A In Character Chain of Command for story purposes and a Out of Character CoC that will be charged with the administration of our game. Both CoCs will be headed up by L’Verrem and I as XO and CO respectively with different people occupying the Second Officer Positions.

We have not reached a decision on who will serve as the ship’s new Second Officer IC, but it will mostly likely be one of the ship’s senior characters. If anyone is interested in having their characters serve in this role, I ask that you let me know ASAP so that you can be considered for the IC position. It is my hope to name the ship’s IC second officer by the end of next week.

To avoid possible confusion the ship’s OOC Second Officer will be working under the title of Assistant Game Manager and will be responsible for helping out with all things OOC. In the absence of Craig and me the Assistant GM will step in and fill the role Acting XO and even acting CO if necessary. For those who haven’t already guessed the Pacifica’s new Assistant Game Manager will be Connie. As I mentioned earlier Connie has already been serving this role for the last couple of years, this announcement just makes it all official.

I realise that these changes may come as a bit of a surprise to some people, but I feel that this is the correct step for us to take as we work to get ourselves out of this very bad slow patch that we are experiencing. If anyone has any questions or concerns about this then please let me know. In the meantime I ask that you all join me in congratulating Connie on her new position.

Thank you.

Daniel.
