Use in Starfleet
The rank of ensign is usually the first commissioned rank assigned to new marine officers fresh out of the Starfleet Marine Academy). The rank is equivalent to the Star Fleet Rank of Ensign.
Second Lieutenants often serve as specialised Squad Leaders or as Platoon Commanders where they can look after anything from 8 to 32 marines.
