First Lieutenant

First Lieutenant is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations.

Use in Starfleet

The rank of First Lieutenant is the second commissioned rank used by Starfleet's Marine Core. The rank is equivalent to the Star Fleet Rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.

In most cases their is very little difference between the ranks of Second and First Lieutenants as it mostly comes primarily down to experience and time served. It is uncommon to see First Lieutenants commanding squad based units and are instead assigned to positions requiring more experience. In most cases First Lieutenants are often serve as Platoon Commanders for specialty platoons, and can also as a Deputy Company Commander. On Starfleet vessels that only carry a small marine detachment a First Lieutenant may be assigned to the position of Marine Commanding Officer.

Advancement

First Lieutenants are eligible for promotion to the marine rank of Captain after serving as a First Lieutenant for 24 months.
