The medical tricorder is a specialised version of the standard Starfleet tricorder. It is equipped with advanced sensors and analysis software that are tailored solely for medical diagnostic purposes. Medical tricorders are often the first tool used by Doctor’s when assessing a patient’s condition, and can function in and out of a ship’s sickbay.

The suite of sensors installed on medical tricorders is quite advanced, but it is no substitute for the more accurate and specialised equipment that can be found in medical facilities. Although considered to be very accurate on the living, tricorders aren’t so accurate when it comes to dealing with the dead. It is one of the first things that medical cadets learn during their first year at the Academy.

Medical tricorders are similar in design to that of the standard tricorder , with the same available features and interface. The major difference between the two is the addition of a larger external sensor unit that can perform highly detailed scans of an entire individual or give focus to a specific area. On older tricorder models like the TR-580 the medical version came complete with a detachable hand scanner, recent advances in technology have made the hand scanner obsolete.

Tricorders in general are widely available to starship personnel, medical tricorders however are not normally made available to non-medical personnel outside of a ship's sickbay.
