Lieutenant Colonel is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations.
Use in Starfleet
The rank of Lieutenant Colonel is a senior and fifth commissioned rank used by Starfleet's Marine Core. The rank is equivalent to the Star Fleet Rank of Commander.
Lieutenant Colonels are experienced marine officers who are often seen serving as Detachment Commanders on Starfleet vessels that are home to larger marine detachments. Lieutenant Colonels can also serve as Battalion Commanding Officers.
Advancement
Lieutenant Colonels are eligible for promotion after serving as a Lieutenant Colonels for between 7 and 10 years, competition for Colonel positions is often very strong.
