Description:

Standing at a height of 173 cm (5' 8") Oliver doesn't match the prototypical and intimidating image of a Starfleet security officer lacking both the height and body frame. He is in tremendous physical shape and maintains his fitness through an extensive daily workout routine. He is well toned and surprisingly strong for his compact size. His brown hair is always cut short and he always keeps a clean and neat appearance both on and off duty. Ollie also has brown eyes and he has been told by his Mother that he resembles his Father at the same age.

General Overview:

Oliver comes off as being a modern day cowboy thanks to his cavalier attitude and the enthusiasm that he brings to his work. He is a naturally confident person who has an assertive personality mixed with a witty and often sarcastic sense of humour. Oliver’s cavalier attitude makes him appear to be more brash and cocky then he actually is. He is a man who holds his friends, family and colleagues in high regard. He is very protective and loyal to those who he cares about and will often go out of his way to help them if they are in need. He has little time for people and ideas that he considers to be stupid or inferior. He is also filled with a large amount of scepticism and has a hard time believing in anything that he can’t see with his own two eyes.

Strengths & Weaknesses:

Oliver’s greatest strength by far is the sheer passion that he holds for his position and for the work he does as a member of Starfleet Security. His enthusiasm for his work is unrelenting and he tackles each and every day with the eagerness of a first year cadet. The passion and the energy that Oliver has for his job will often take his colleagues by surprise and it normally pushes them to lift their own work rate as well. His loyalty to his friends and family is unquestionable and if times are tough he will go out of his way to be there for them. He has his own personal set of ethics and his own moral code that he follows at all times. He will stick to what he thinks is right at all times and will never waiver from that path. Oliver has a tendency to be a little bit impatient and he will often act on instinct before thinking things through. This act first think later attitude of his has often gotten him into trouble in the past. Since working under Commander Andrews on Starbase 212 Oliver has made attempts to improve on this failing, but in the heat of the moment he will often fall back into old habits. He is naturally confident and outgoing when it comes to socialising with people and making new friends. When interacting with women he is attracted to however, his confidence is little more than a façade. He struggles in such situations and is a lot more circumspect then he normally is. Oliver can also be stubborn at times and is very set in his ways and routines. He is not a fan of change. Instead of bracing new ideas Oliver prefers to stick to tried and proven methods.

Ambitions:

Ever since he was a young child Oliver has always wanted to be in a position where he could help people and serve the greater community. He had first considered serving in the local police force, but soon set his eyes on the bigger and loftier goal of joining Starfleet Security. He is now serving in his dream role and has little plans or desires to move beyond the security field in the near future. He hasn’t closed the door on the idea of one day moving in the command field, but for the moment those thoughts are far from his mind. Outside of his career Oliver wants nothing more than to find the perfect woman to settle down with and start a family.

Oliver has a wide variety of interest and hobbies that he likes to pursue during his free time. First and foremost is his love of sport. Oliver will engage and participate in any or all sporting events that he comes across even if he has never played it before. In particular he enjoys playing basketball and racquetball and parrises squares, he has also been known to enjoy the odd game of golf. Oliver likes being in the outdoors, he enjoys camping, fishing, kayaking, hiking and even a bit rock climbing. When he is not out and being active, Oliver prefers to sit back and relax with a good book.

History

Childhood & Early Life

Oliver Thomas Shepard was born to parents Joel and Ellie Shepard in the year 2358. He grew up with his parents, his younger brother Ben and sister Grace in the peaceful North American township of Babylon in Suffolk County New York. Both of his parents worked for the Federation Naval Patrol on Earth. Their mother Ellie who was an oceanographer left the navy in 2360 after becoming pregnant with Ben to take up a teaching position at Long Island University. Their father who at time was a Lieutenant in the Navy continued to serve was often out at sea and away from home. When Joel was out at sea he would talk to his family back home every night and he would often entertain Oliver and his siblings with old sea stories and songs. His Father’s stories often a mix of fact and fiction, but Oliver found them fascinating and this lead to him developing a interest in maritime history, a interest which he still holds to this day. While his father was out at sea Oliver had extra responsibilities around the family home. His mother would often rely on him to keep a watchful eye on his younger siblings and keep them out of trouble which they were prone to finding. Ollie loved the responsibility that rested on his shoulder and as he grew up he naturally became very protective of both Ben and Grace.

Growing up Oliver never really cared or gave much thought to his studies and he cruised through his schooling. His grades were always respectable and passable but they met the full potential that both of his parents knew that he was capable of. It wasn’t until Oliver set his sights on joining Starfleet that his attitude to his studies started to change. He was taken aback by the academic standards that were required to enter Starfleet Academy. For a time he seriously considered bypassing the process completely by enlisting as a non-commissioned officer. His mother talked him out of that idea, she insisted that he could make it as an officer if he knuckled down and worked hard at school. Oliver took his mother’s words to heart and took to his studies with a new and determined focus. By the time Oliver had graduated from high school he had lifted his grades to the required level that he needed for the Academy. He submitted his application to join Starfleet Academy at the end of that year and was accepted as part of the Academy’s second intake for the next semester.

Starfleet Academy

Oliver found himself in his element at the Academy and had little problem adjusting to the rigors and requirements that came with life on campus. He excelled during his survival training in Australia and acquitted himself well during the various zero gravity training exercises. He was initially unsure on what course he wanted to major in. The one thing that Oliver did know for certain was that he wanted to become a part of Starfleet Security. He spent his first year dabbling in a number of different courses and fields in the area of security to wet his appetite before finally deciding to pursue a major in Criminal Justice. He also took a number of tactical based courses to round out his training and developed a speciality in phaser based weaponry. Sports and physical activity were also a major part of Oliver’s time at the Academy. During his freshmen year he joined the Academy’s racquetball team and soon became one of the team’s most consistent performers. Despite having never played it before Oliver also joined one of the Academy’s parrises squares teams. He enjoyed the physicality of the game, but struggled to find his footing in the intense game. He stuck with it and by the time of the senior year he was one his teams two co-captains.

Starfleet Career

Assignment #1 USS Pacifica

Oliver completed his fourth year at Starfleet Academy in 2380 and graduated as a fully qualified security officer with the rank of Ensign. In 2381 he was one of two recently graduated security officers to be assigned to the USS Pacifica a Sovereign Class starship operating with the Forth Fleet. Oliver couldn’t believe his luck as the Pacifica was a dream assignment for any officer let alone a raw recruit fresh from the Academy. His fellow graduate from the academy who was joining him on the Pacifica was Ensign Amy Sinclair. At the time Oliver didn’t know her too well, but the two officers quickly bonded over their shared assignment and soon struck up a close friendship which has remained to this very day.

The Pacifica at the time was heading up a Starfleet Task Group that had been put together to put a stop to a well organised pirate group that was operating along and in the Romulan Neutral Zone. The profile and nature of the Pacifica’s missions had the ship’s security and tactical department in heavy demand. Despite the lack of away team missions Oliver found the work exhilarating and he loved every minute of it. His training allowed him to play a key role in an internal investigation on the ship that was headed by his department head Lieutenant Grex. The investigation itself went nowhere, but it allowed Oliver to show off his versatility to the rest of the Pacifica’s Security Department. In March 2383 Ollie along with Amy Sinclair were promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. Shortly following his promotion Oliver was presented with the opportunity to join the large security detachment on Starbase 212 as a Team Leader. Oliver was happy with his position on the Pacifica but it was an opportunity that he simply could not ignore.

Assignment #2 Starbase 212

Oliver arrived on Starbase 212 in May of 2383. He immediately discovered that life as a security officer aboard a large starbase was much different then what he had grown use to on the Pacifica. Working in security aboard a starbase involved more hands on police work, which Oliver loved. He had pictured himself serving in such a role since first setting his sights on joining Starfleet. This led him to succeeding in the role. The attitude and dedication that he showed to his work soon caught the attention of his superior officer Commander Gavin Andrews a veteran and highly respected security chief with over twenty years experience. Oliver saw Andrews as a kindred spirit and the two officers quickly built up a strong rapport with each other. In 2384 Commander Andrews named Oliver as the Starbase’s new Assistant Chief Security Officer.
