A Petty Officer Second Class is a military rank the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations.
Use in Starfleet
Petty Officer Second Class (Abbreviated to PO2) is a non-commissioned officer rank in Starfleet. The Marine rank equivalent to Petty Officer Second Class is Sergeant.
Second Class Petty Officers have been promoted within their occupational speciality from Petty Officer Third Class. They may be addressed by their occupational title, such as "Hosptial Corpsman Second Class" or "Transporter Operator Second Class" as well as by the more generic Petty Officer Second Class. Second Class Petty Officer's take a fleet-wide competitive exam to be promoted to Petty Officer First Class.
