Use in the Starfleet Marine Corps
Private First Class is a non-commissioned officer rank in Starfleet's Marine Corp. The Starfleet rank equivalent is Crewman Apprentice.
Private First Class is the second lowest enlisted rank, just above Private and below Lance Corporal. Some new recruits may begin their Marine Corps careers as a Private First Class if they meet certain criteria when they enlist.
