Second Lieutenants often serve as specialised Squad Leaders or as Platoon Commanders where they can look after anything from 8 to 32 marines. On Starfleet vessels that only carry a small marine detachment a Second Lieutenant may serve as the Marine Executive Officer or in some cases even as the Marine Commanding Officer.
Advancement
A Second Lieutenant is usually promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant after 24 months of service in Starfleet's Marine Corps.
