Major is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations.

The rank of Major is the forth commissioned rank used by Starfleet's Marine Core. The rank is equivalent to the Star Fleet Rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Major's are experienced marine officers who have served Starfleet's Marine Corp for a number of years and often serve in the positions of Deputy Detachment Commander and as Detachment Commander on Starfleet vessels that are home to larger marine detachments. Majors can also serve as Battalion Operations Officers in Marine Facilites and as Primary Staff Officers who oversee areas such as personnel, logistical and operations.
