Personality & Traits

General Overview

Matthew is the sort of person who prefers to keep to himself on most occasions, he is however quite outspoken and is not afraid to put across his own point of view. Because of this he is often seen as being rather cocky and as a perfectionist which he is sometimes. He is also seen as just being a unfriendly sort of person. However this is not really the case as he does prove to be a loyal friend to those who he is close to. This is because he only opens up to close friends and workmates. Matthew also has a very active distrust of the Cardassians, which has come about from being involved in two wars against them during his career in Star Fleet.

Hobbies and Interests

Matthew is a work-a-holic who prides himself on his work. This means that he often spends a lot of his free time following up on his work, as he always likes to keep on top of things. He is also a big fan of earth literature and when he can often be found reading when he is not working. Matthew also enjoys a occasional drink at the ships bar which allows him to unwind after difficult days at work.

History

Matthew was born in 2342 and grew up as the second eldest in a family with four children. Being more or less a middle child, he had a mostly uneventful childhood and developed a strong relationship with both of his brothers, particularly with his younger brother Wayne. Like his brothers Matthew was keen to follow in his father's footsteps by joining Star Fleet. He concentrated hard on his studies and made very little time to social pursuits. Once he reached the required age limit Matthew enlisted to join Star Fleet as an enlisted officer as he wanted to stay well clear of the responsibilities and duties that were associated with being an officer.

So far throughout his career Matthew has served in a number of different positions on a number of different ships which has helped him pick up numerous skills and experience. Matthew began his career on the USS King as the ship's Master at Arms. He spent quite a bit of his time training in other fields gaining experience in a number of different departments including engineering and ship operations. His six years on the King were quite eventful as the ship was stationed on the Federation-Cardassian Border during the last few years of hostilities between the two powers. He saw quite a bit of combat while serving on the King both on ship and off as the vessel had a number of encounters with the Cardassians and was injured on a few occasions. This has left him with a rather negative opinion of the Cardassians. In his time on the King Thomas was a valued member of the ship's security department, where he began quite a good marksman with the Phaser.

During the year 2368 the USS King returned to dry dock for a much needed upgrade and Matthew was transferred to the USS Hokkaido where he took up the position of Engineer's mate. At first he found his new position quite challenging and had some difficulty settling in, but in all he liked the change of pace and eventually settled into his new assignment. He served on the Hokkaido until 2371 and continued to develop his overall skills. In 2371 he again transferred to Starbase 105 where he took up the post as the station's quarter master. During his 2 years on Starbase 105 Matthew never settled into his new job and was often at heads with his crewmates. In general he didn't the dull pace of Starbase life and his work started to become repetitive to such a point that he requested a transfer.

His transfer was approved and Matthew transferred to the USS Helena as the ship's materials officer. For the first time in a number of years Matthew was comfortable with his job as it was something that he enjoyed doing, he was starting to get accustomed to his new job when news of his brothers death onboard the Sarajevo hit him hard. The Dominion War broke out late in 2373. This brought back a number of memories to Matthew about his previous engagements with the Cardassians and was also keen to do his part to help stop the Dominion who were responsible for the death of his younger brother.. The USS Helena spent five months on the frontline facing both Cardassian and Dominion ships on a number of different times. The USS Helena joined the task force assembled to retake DS9 in the early months of 2374. This was to be the last mission of the Helena as the ship was destroyed when the Federation fleet engaged the joint Cardassian and Dominion Fleet. Matthew who was helping out on the bridge was severely injured when the ship was struck. Matthew was one of the few who made it off the crippled Helena before it completely destroyed. He spent the next four months in recovery after the battle. It was a long and difficult time for him as he wanted to be out on the frontlines.

As soon as he made a full recovery he transferred to the USS Lincoln which was operating on the front lines. While he was officially the ship's material officer he was heavily involved with the ship's security department. He and the Lincoln saw a lot of action during the last year and a half of the war as the ship participated in the last 2 major campaigns of the war. Matthew was again badly injured during the battle of Cardassia, which had him laid up in recovery for just over a month. Once he had fully recovered from his injuries he returned to full active duty on the Lincoln where he served happily until 2380, when he surprised the crew by requesting for a transfer because of personal reasons. After a few days his transfer was reluctantly approved by his Commanding Officer and he transferred to the USS Pacifica. The reasons for why he requested the transfer are still not really known.
