Private is a military rank the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations.
Use in Starfleet
Private is a non-commissioned officer rank in Starfleet's Marine Corp. The Starfleet rank equivalent is Crewman Recruit.
Most new, non-officer recruits begin their career in the Starfleet Marine Corp as a private. Advancement to the rank of Private First Class is often automatic after six months of service.
