Sergeant Major
Sergeant Major is a military rank the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations.
Use in the Starfleet Marine Corps
Sergeant Major is a non-commissioned officer rank in Starfleet's Marine Corp. The Starfleet rank equivalent is Master Chief Petty Officer.
In the Marine Corps, Sergeant Major is the ninth and highest enlisted rank, just above Master Sergeant. Sergeant Major is both a rank and a military "billet". Marine Corps Sergeants Major serve as the senior enlisted Marine in the Corps' units of battalion, squadron or higher echelon, to assist the unit's commander and to handle matters of discipline and morale among the enlisted Marines.
Sergeant Majors are at the top of the Enlisted/NCO ladder and can therefore not be promoted further although they can apply for a warrant or commission.
